Growth inhibition by acycloguanosine of herpesviruses isolated from human infections.
Inhibition by acycloguanosine (ACG) of plaque formation by harpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), varicella-zoster virus, and cytomegalovirus was studied. Seventeen clinical isolates of HSV-1 were inhibited by ACG at a mean 50% inhibitory dose (ID(50)) of 0.15 +/- 0.09 muM. The mean ID(50) for 10 isolates of HSV-2 was 1.62 +/- 0.76 muM, and for four isolates of varicella-zoster v...
متن کاملHerpesviruses and human cancer.
Although it has been established that some viruses can cause cancer in animals, the evidence for a viral etiology of at least some human cancers has been slow to accumulate. At present, viruses acting alone or in association with such factors as hormones, chemicals, genetic determinants, or other unknown cofactors have been linked to five human cancers (see Table 1). Three of these malignancies...
متن کاملHuman Herpesviruses 6 and 7
The identification of human herpesvirus (HHV) 6 (HHV-6) and 7 (HHV-7) was first reported in 1986 and 1990, respectively. HHV-6 was isolated initially from the blood of several immunodeficient adults, including some with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) (1). The existence of HHV-7 was first revealed in the blood of a healthy, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative adult (2). Extens...
متن کاملHuman Herpesviruses in Hematologic Diseases
The members of the Herpesvirales containing more than 130 different herpesviruses have already been isolated from all animal species representing the higher steps of evolution. According to our knowledge, eight herpesviruses are classified as human herpesviruses: Herpes simplex virus 1 (Human herpesvirus 1, HHV-1), Herpes simplex virus 2 (Human herpesvirus 2, HHV-2), Varicella-zoster virus (Hum...

AIMS To determine the sensitivity and specificity of culture, immunohistochemistry (IHC), the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and in situ hybridisation (ISH) for detecting herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) in the cornea of patients undergoing penetrating keratoplasty. To compare the incidence of HSV-1 in the cornea with that of varicella zoster virus (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Epstein-Barr v...
